How to Prevent Drug Addiction in Adults

Substance abuse also called as drug abuse is a process which involves excessive use of the drugs. These drugs have very damaging effects on the body, hence these should not be abused.

Here are some tips for the parents to prevent their children from abusing the substances:
  • Create a supportive and stable home environment for the adolescent child because children tend to abuse drugs if there is any violence in the house.
  • It is better for you to talk to your children and discuss about the use of drugs and also explain them the dangers of the use of drugs on the health, career, personal life, etc. If the child feels he can talk to you, it may alleviate some of the pressure in his life.
  • Discuss with the children about the environment in their school or college and ask if there is any problem with the others in the school.
  • As a parent you have to make strict rules regarding your child's friends and you have to stick to those rules even though your child doesn't like them.
  • Monitor your child's activity and attitude for any noticeable changes and if there is any change it may be due to substance abuse.
  • Know about the friends of your child and if possible also know about their parents because generally adults initiate the substance abuse due to the pressure from their friends.
  • As the children learn more from you, whether good or bad, abstain yourself from drinking. If you have a problem of substance abuse there is a high risk of developing this problem in your child.
  • If your child starts missing classes and making bad grades it could be a sign that the child is having some problems, which can result in a substance abuse. Know about the behavior of your child in the school by talking to their teachers, because some children will put on an act at home and then behave the opposite at school.

By following the above tips, parents can prevent drug abuse in their kids.
