What are the Symptoms of Root Canal Treatment Failure?

Ensuring a proper dental care can avoid any dental problems and maintains the oral health. However, most of us do not recognize its importance and face several dental problems. Simple issues like pain and inflammation should not be neglected as they may act as an indication of severe problems like infection of root canal. However, the pain is relieved after the treatment. But, there are chances that the treatment may fail leading to further problems. Here are symptoms indicating the root canal treatment failure.

Tooth pain
As you know the infection in the dental pulp causes severe pain before a root canal treatment. The dentist cleans the pulp while treating it. However, if the cleaning is not done properly, then it may cause pain and discomfort. The American Dental Association (ADA) even stated that infection may also damage the jaw.

Swelling in Gum
It is often known that swelling in gums is seen after the root canal treatment. However, it is lost after few days. If the swelling or tenderness stays for a long time, then it is an indication that the treatment had failed. Return of bacteria to the area may cause and retain the swelling in gums.

Inflammation
Failure of root canal therapy may cause inflammation associated with infection surfaces. The bony area at the end of the tooth faces the inflammation mostly. A process called apicoectomy or root-end resection is done to relieve it. The infection is removed by cutting the gums in this procedure to reduce the inflammation.

Facial Swelling or Sinus Infection
Infection of sinus tracts and facial swelling are some other symptoms which are seen due to failure of root canal treatment.

Some other signs like sensitivity while eating may also be seen with post root canal treatment failure.
