What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Paint-on Teeth Whiteners?

It is obvious that we wish to have a beautiful smile. However, many people feel shy of smiling freely because of their discolored teeth. Teeth whitening is a good option for such people. Apart from the other procedures of teeth whitening a dentist performs, paint-on teeth whitening is the one that can be done on own. Many types of paint-on teeth whiteners are available in market. Here is some information regarding the advantages and disadvantages of use of paint-on teeth whiteners.

Advantages of Paint-on Teeth Whiteners
As the name suggests, these products are painted directly on the teeth. The chemical compound bonds to the teeth thereby forming an adhesive layer once it dries. The film imparts the bleaching agent to the teeth that in turn brightens them. Some of the benefits of paint-on teeth whiteners are given below.
  • It is very easy to use these teeth whitening products.
  • The price of these whiteners is relatively less. They are affordable and help in avoiding the expensive dental costs associated with the visit of a dentist.
  • They can be applied selectively to individual teeth.

Disadvantages of Paint-on Teeth Whiteners
Though they are economical and easy to use, they have some side-effects and disadvantages. Some of their disadvantages are given below.
  • It is very difficult to use them for the whole teeth. Whereas, using trays and strips for teeth whitening is much easier for brightening the full set of teeth.
  • Though their application seems to be simple, it is very difficult to use them requiring some drying time.
  • They are not as efficient as trays or strips. This is because of many reasons, one being the inclusion of weaker bleaching agents. The paint-on products also get dislodged easily. In addition, the treatment cycle required for a drastic change is not that long enough.
  • They are not meant for serious bleaching. They can only be used for touch-ups or maintenance of professionally whitened teeth that are treated at a dentist's office.
  • Use of paint-on teeth whiteners is associated with some side-effects. The peroxide components present in them may cause some irritation to the gums leading to tooth sensitivity.
  • Improper usage of the products can damage the enamel.

Paint-on teeth whitening is only good when used in a limited fashion. Otherwise, it would lead to many other problems.
