A napkin, or a face towel which is also known as serviette in some countries (like Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and South Africa) is usually small and folded. It is a rectangular in shape and is used for wiping the mouth while eating or dining.

In some places, serviettes are those made of paper whereas napkins are made of cloth. In Australia, 'serviette' generally refers to the paper variety and 'napkin' refers to the cloth variety.

Conventionally, the napkin is always folded and placed left of the place setting, outside the outermost fork. In some restaurants or in caterer's hall, napkins are folded into more or less elaborate shapes and displayed on the empty plate. Number of napkins are bundled together by a napkin ring. A napkin holder is used to contain napkins.

The term napkins comes from ancient Roman. Napkins are an essential item in kitchens as well as on dining tables. Napkins are used to wipe your hands, face, or require cleaning utensils in kitchen after washing. Thus, we can say that napkins are a multipurpose table linen item.

However, napkins are required in kitchen for cleaning, wiping the utensils but it is most popular item for table linens. Table napkins are also called dinner napkins. It became an indispensable table linen not only for hotels and restaurants but also for homes. Table napkins are not only used for wiping mouth after eating but also are used to cover the lap to protect clothing. These napkins are available in different colors, designs.
