Care to be Taken after Removal of Wisdom Teeth

A good oral health practice avoids your dental problems. Among the many kinds of dental problems, those related to wisdom teeth are common among people. These molars arise between ages of 17 and 25. However, with the risks associated with these teeth, sometimes it is advised by a dentist to remove them. However, you should ensure that proper care is taken after the removal of wisdom teeth.
  • In the first 24 hours after the removal of wisdom teeth, do not eat or chew at the side of the mouth from which the teeth are removed. Ensure that you take soft foods and drink plenty of water. You should not brush, spit, rinse or use mouthwash in the first 24 hours.
  • To reduce the swelling of your face, treat the area with an ice pack for every 20 minutes. This also minimizes any pain.
  • You should avoid taking carbonated and hot beverages, alcohol and caffeine. Also, stay away from smoking. This is because, they cause irritation in the socket area which results in pain. It is also necessary to avoid hot, spicy and chewy food.
  • Over-the-counter medicines or medicines recommended by the dentist should be taken to alleviate the pain.
  • The wisdom teeth removal may include traditional stitches which have to be removed later. In such cases, get details from your dentist for a follow-up appointment. Avoid heavy exercises till that time as they damage the sutures causing bleeding.
  • If you experience any symptoms like fever, worsening of swelling, bleeding from the nose, severe pain and pus oozing out of the socket, then call your dentist immediately and get proper medication.

If you do not follow these aftercare tips, there are chances of further infection and pain leading to more dental costs.
